We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.

Tour Itinerary
Welcome to the heart of the Dolomites. After settling into your accommodation in the center of this legendary mountain town, the afternoon is yours to shape. Take a relaxing stroll along the pedestrianized Corso Italia, pick up any last-minute trail supplies, or simply unwind with an aperitivo as the evening light paints the dramatic Tofane peaks.
Summer brings Cortina completely to life with vibrant outdoor cafes, mountain gear shops, and authentic trattorias serving local Ladin specialties.
Rest well tonight – tomorrow, your Dolomites adventure begins!
Accommodation: Hotel in Cortina
Meals: Dinner at your leisure – Cortina offers an excellent range of restaurants, and guests love experiencing the town’s dining scene.
(If you prefer, we can arrange to include dinner at your basecamp hotel.)

Your adventure begins with the Faloria Cable Car rising from Cortina to 2,120 meters – panoramic views of the Tofane peaks, and glacier-capped Monte Cristallo opening up within minutes.
From the top, the trail winds through forest toward Passo Tre Croci before ascending into the grand Sorapis amphitheatre, where the trail narrows and the mountains close in around you, adding a welcome dash of adventure.
Then it happens – Lago di Sorapis appears: an impossible turquoise jewel, its glacier-fed waters glowing in a massive rocky cirque. Rifugio Vandelli sits just minutes from the shore, your home for the night, with the lake almost entirely to yourself.
Hiking: 10.6km | ↑466m ↓656m | 4.5 hours
Accommodation: Mountain hut overlooking Lake Sorapis
Meals: Breakfast and dinner included

Leaving Sorapis behind, the trail drops over 600 meters through quiet larch and beech forest, winding past a scenic waterfall with Monte Cristallo dominating the skyline. It’s a peaceful, solitary walk – a world away from yesterday’s crowds.
After crossing the valley floor, the route climbs into high alpine meadows with a 360° theatre of peaks. The jagged Sorapis massif behind you, the Marmarole Group stretching east, and on clear days, the unmistakable silhouette of Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the distance. Lunch is at a beautifully restored agriturismo malga – an alpine farm highly rated for its local, seasonal cuisine.
The final climb is pure Dolomite magic; dramatic spires towering above, Lake Misurina shimmering in the valley below, and a terrace sunset panorama that makes the day’s effort very much worthwhile.
Hiking: 12km | ↑828m ↓645m | 4.5-5 hours
Accommodation: Mountain Hut
Meals: Breakfast and dinner included

The most challenging day of the tour, and arguably the most dramatic. A short but steep descent requires careful footing, particularly if snow or ice lingers into early summer. The trail eases as you drop into the valley, larches and spruce closing in with cool shade, before opening onto Lake Misurina with Tre Cime di Lavaredo commanding the northern skyline. Take the opportunity to circle the lake and soak it all in – a well-deserved lunch stop before the final push.
The last ascent is a classic Dolomite approach – steady climbing through peaceful larch meadows before breaking into the stark, rocky Ciadin dei Tocci landscape. The immense Torre Wundt looms directly ahead, its massive wall filling the view, with the southern faces of Tre Cime rising behind. A dramatic finish to a demanding day.
Hike info: 8.9km | ↑1102m ↓851m | 5hrs
Accommodation: Mountain Hut
Meals: Breakfast and dinner included

This is the day you’ve been waiting for. The morning opens with a short technical descent from your hut – fixed cables and rock steps guiding you through a steep, aided gully, before reaching Forcella di Rinbianco, a windswept saddle offering your first glimpse of Tre Cime’s southern faces. The trail descends to the valley floor before climbing back to Rifugio Auronzo, where the famous Tre Cime circuit begins.
The route rounds beneath the southeast faces before climbing to Forcella Lavaredo (2,454m), where the three peaks gradually shift and align with every step downward, their legendary north faces slowly revealing themselves in full.
Eventually, you arrive at the red-roofed Rifugio, your home for the night, and quite possibly the finest mountain hut view in all the Alps. All three summits rise in perfect formation directly before you. Set your alarm early… first light on Tre Cime is something you will never forget. Your tour notes will also reveal a few hidden gems on this day that most hikers simply walk past – some discoveries that will add an extra dimension to an already iconic location!
**There is a 10-minute section that is exposed, steep, and can be slippery. There are fixed cables to assist you for added safety. Additional equipment is not required; however, you must be confident, sure-footed, and not afraid of heights or suffer from vertigo. (A pair of gloves may be helpful for extra grip).
Hike info: 10.2km | ↑688m ↓652m | 4-4.5hrs
Accommodation: Mountain Hut
Meals: Breakfast and dinner included

Your final day delivers more memorable experiences – completing the circuit of Tre Cime’s legendary northern walls, followed by one of the Dolomites’ most exhilarating viewpoints of Cadini di Misurina.
The trail descends into Pian da Rin before reaching Malga Langalm, where Tre Cime’s vast northern walls rise directly before you. The path continues around the western flank, traversing a high ridge with 360° panoramas stretching across multiple Dolomite ranges – before the Cadini di Misurina steals the show.
Hidden until you round a bend, the full extent of the Cadini suddenly comes into view – a wall of sharp limestone spires rising above the valley. The optional final approach to the lookout is narrow and exposed on both sides, but those who venture out stand on a knife-edge ridge face-to-face with one of the most dramatic mountain panoramas in the Alps.
From there, a gentle descent passes Lake Antorno – the Cadini peaks perfectly mirrored in its still waters, before a well-earned lakeside lunch at Lake Misurina.
The perfect ending to an unforgettable week.
Distance: 13km | ↑326m ↓983m | 5hrs
Accommodation: Hotel in Cortina
Meals: Breakfast is included at the Hut

After breakfast in Cortina, it’s time to say goodbye to the Dolomites – though the memories will stay with you far longer. The impossible turquoise of Lago di Sorapis, those first views of Tre Cime’s legendary north faces, the ridge walk at Cadini, sunset from your mountain hut terraces – these moments have a way of calling you back!
Depart Cortina or continue your adventure at your leisure. Whether you’re heading to Venice, Lake Garda, or onwards to explore more of the Dolomites, you leave having experienced some of the finest mountain scenery the Alps have to offer.

Self-Guided Tour FAQ
No, you don’t need a via ferrata kit or climbing equipment for the main itinerary. The fixed cables on the Lake Sorapis trail and the short technical descent from your hut on Day 5 are secured sections that don’t require harnesses or carabiners. However, sturdy hiking boots with good grip and a pair of gloves for the cables can be helpful. If you plan to do the optional Cadini viewpoint on Day 6, no technical equipment is needed, but you must be comfortable with heights and exposure.
There is absolutely no problem bringing a harness, sling, or carabiner if it makes you more comfortable. There are via ferrata in the area that can be done within your itinerary time frame – e.g. Monte Paterno at Tre Cime.
A true fear of heights – then NO, we do not recommend it.
The trek includes several exposed sections – particularly the cabled approach to Lake Sorapis, the technical descent on Day 5, and the optional Cadini viewpoint on Day 6. If you have a moderate fear of heights but can manage exposure with handrails, you should be okay.
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo circuit is one of the most popular hikes in the Dolomites and gets 1000’s of visitors a day, especially from July through August, and more so on weekends. In our experience, people are spread out over +10km – and it actually has a nice vibe after 3 days of passing few people.
The first section from Rifugio Auronzo to Forcella Lavaredo (the first 20% of the trail) is usually the busiest.
What makes this tour special – you are spending the night at Tre Cime. You will have the evening and the following morning without crowds!
The final approach to the famous Cadini viewpoint is a reasonably narrow, exposed ridge with drop-offs on both sides and no safety barriers. It’s only recommended for those comfortable with heights and exposure. The path can be slippery when wet, and you should not attempt it in bad weather, strong winds, or if you’re uncomfortable with the exposure.
Many points along the trail to the viewpoint give amazing views for all comfort levels of hikers.
This trek is moderately challenging. You should be comfortable hiking 4-6 hours per day with elevation gains of 600-1,100 meters on some days. The terrain includes forest trails, rocky paths, steep ascents and descents, scree fields and shifting talus, and some exposure. Regular hiking experience and good cardiovascular fitness are important. If you can comfortably hike 10-12km with 800m elevation gain, you’ll manage this trek well.
Private Guided Tour FAQ
It’s a dedicated group booking for your group only, not a shared departure with others.
Our pricing is based on a minimum of 4 people per group, with a recommended maximum of 7 participants per guide for safety, transport, and accommodation reasons. Larger groups can be accommodated on request.
Yes. Your guide tailors the daily pace, breaks, and commentary to your group’s preferences and abilities.
Accommodation on private guided tours is shared dormitory. Private rooms can be requested, subject to availability, at an additional cost.
Your group gets an English-speaking certified mountain guide for all hiking days, who handles safety and weather decisions, navigation, pacing, general route decisions, and tailors breaks and commentary to your group. It also includes private transfers from the trail end back to your hotel in Cortina.
On Private Guided tours, transfers from the trail end are included back to your hotel in Cortina.
The start of your trek is a short walk to the Faloria Cable car, where your adventure begins.
General Tour FAQ
We strongly recommend comprehensive insurance covering mountain hiking up to 3,200 meters, medical expenses, emergency mountain rescue and helicopter evacuation, trip cancellation, and lost belongings. Mountain rescue can be extremely costly. Ensure your policy specifically covers trekking and alpine activities at altitude – many standard policies don’t.
Half-board is standard at all rifugios, which includes dinner and breakfast.
Lunches are not included, but most huts offer packed lunches, which you can order the night before, or you can purchase meals at huts you pass during the day.
Hut breakfasts include bread, cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, muslie, and hot beverages.
Dinners are multi-course, communal meals featuring local dishes like polenta, pasta, goulash, soups, cake & strudel. Some huts offer a choice of 2-3 meals per course, others operate à la carte, more like a restaurant.
Vegetarian and vegan options are usually available if requested in advance.
Please communicate any allergies or food intolerances when checking in, and again at meal times.
Most huts can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free meals, though options may be limited. Inform us of any dietary needs, allergies, or intolerances at booking so we can notify all huts in advance. Huts prepare meals based on bookings with limited storage, so last-minute requests can’t always be fulfilled. For highly specific requirements, consider supplementing with your own provisions.
You can stop at Malga’s (alpine farms) or mountain huts (rifugios) along the way and purchase complete meals, snacks, drinks, etc.
You will also have the option to purchase a packed lunch from most huts. You just need to order it the evening before – check with the hut staff when checking in.
Mobile coverage is generally good but varies by location and can be unreliable in deep valleys or some high ridges. Most huts have a signal, and many offer WiFi (sometimes for a fee). Download offline maps as backup and carry a portable charger. Inform someone at home of your daily itinerary and expected arrival times.
Yes – most huts have outlets available in common areas or rooms. As a precaution, we recommend bringing a compact power bank.
Since you’re staying in mountain huts, pack light. Essential items include: a sleeping bag liner (mandatory in all rifugios), lightweight hut clothes, toiletries, a quick-dry towel, a waterproof jacket and layers, sunscreen and sunglasses, water, snacks, a headlamp, earplugs, flip-flops or sandles for the huts, and cash (most huts don’t accept cards).
We recommend that your total pack weight be around 8 -12kg.
We provide a full pack list upon booking with us.
You can also get a good idea from our Packing List page.
No. Mountain huts provide blankets and pillows, but you must bring your own sleeping bag liner or slip for hygiene purposes. This is mandatory in all rifugios (that do not supply linen). You can purchase cotton, silk, or synthetic liners – they’re lightweight and pack down small.
Hiking poles are highly recommended, especially for steep descents and for stability on rocky sections. They’re particularly helpful on trails when rocks can be slippery and can take alot of pressure off your knees.
Collapsible poles are best so you can stow them when necessary.
Most huts offer showers for an additional fee (€3-8 for a few minutes of hot water), but availability depends on water supply and can be limited during busy periods. Not all huts have showers, and some may turn them off during dry spells. Bring wet wipes just in case, and a quick-dry towel.
Upon booking, we request your arrival airport or the nearest town you will be coming from. We then provide you with transport options, the latest timetable, and directions.
The itinerary has pre-booked accommodations at specific huts each night, so modifications are limited. However, you have options for alternative paths or can shorten stages using cable cars where available. If you need a rest day or must cut the trek short, we can help arrange alternatives. Changes may incur additional costs and are subject to availability.

Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁
Amazing!!
What a trip! From day one, everything ran so smoothly that we could just relax and enjoy ourselves. The guides were absolute pros and always thinking ahead so the group got the most out of each day. We had so many “wow” moments where you just have to stop and soak it all in. Great food, welcoming hotels, and a perfect balance of adventure and relax time. If you’re looking for a trip that’s easy, fun, and unforgettable, then I have no problem recommending Dolomites Active Tours.
Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.
Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
