Tour Itinerary

Your Dolomites adventure begins when you arrive in Val Gardena and check into your base camp hotel. There are three possible villages for your stay, depending on availability, each with its own character. Ortisei is the valley’s main hub, a lively town with shops, cafes, and restaurants lining its pedestrian center. Santa Cristina sits quietly between its neighbors, offering an intimate village feel with mountain views in every direction. Selva, at the valley’s head, delivers pure alpine ambiance and immediate access to the trails.

Use this day to settle in and explore your surroundings at leisure. The mountains are calling, and tomorrow you’ll answer.

Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Val Gardena

Today starts with a cable car, whisking you up onto Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest high-alpine pasture: 56 square kilometers of rolling meadows at 2,000 meters. For centuries, local farmers have driven their cattle up here each summer to graze, and that tradition is what shaped the landscape you’re walking through today.

The trail is gentle, which is exactly what you want with views like these. The Sciliar massif dominates the southern horizon, its twin towers, the Santner and Euringer peaks, instantly recognizable as South Tyrol’s signature landmark. To the east, the jagged Odle spires cut into the sky. To the south, the Rosengarten massif waits for sunset, when its walls turn shades of rose and gold in the alpenglow.

Your hut for the night is positioned perfectly for that show. Dinner is communal-style, hearty South Tyrolean cooking shared with hikers from around the world, and as the light fades over the meadows, you’ll understand why this phenomenon has captivated visitors for centuries.

Hiking: 13 km | ↑820m ↓370m | 5 hours
Accommodation: Mountain hut

Wake early for one of the tour’s most rewarding mornings. A short, invigorating 100-meter climb from the hut brings you to Monte Pez, the highest point of the Sciliar massif at 2,563 meters. In the crisp morning air, when visibility is at its best, you’ll take in an unobstructed 360-degree panorama: the whole of Alpe di Siusi spread below like a green carpet, with Dolomite giants ringing you on every side.

From the summit, today’s trail crosses the high plateau of the Sciliar massif, descending toward Tierser Alpl Hütte, a good spot for a lunch break, before continuing over Passo Duron. Here you skirt the edge of the Antermoia group, a wild, rarely visited corner of the Dolomites. Beyond the pass, the trail continues toward the Sassolungo and Sasso Piatto groups, their dramatic rock towers rising ahead for the rest of the walk.

Your hut for the night sits at the foot of these peaks, with the chain of Dolomite massifs around Val di Fassa unfolding beyond it. On clear days, you can spot the Marmolada, the Dolomites’ highest peak, its vertical north face gleaming even in summer. As sunset approaches, watch the light turn the Sassolungo and Sasso Piatto towers into silent watchmen against the darkening sky.

Hiking: 13 km | ↑500m ↓630m | 5 hours
Accommodation: Mountain hut

Your final day on the trail takes you on a scenic circuit around the Sassolungo group, one of the Dolomites’ most imposing massifs. This is a gentle day in terms of elevation change, which leaves plenty of room to focus on the scenery as it constantly shifts. The trail winds through high meadows and across rocky sections, each turn revealing a new perspective on these ancient mountains.

Looking back, you’ll see Alpe di Siusi from an entirely new angle, a good measure of how far you’ve come. Ahead, the Sella group rises in a massive block, while the needle-like peaks of the Puez-Odle group create a dramatic backdrop to the north. For those wanting an extra challenge, an optional higher route climbs to 2,700 meters, offering even more spectacular views of the Sella massif.

Your destination is Passo Sella, one of the major mountain passes connecting Val Gardena to Val di Fassa, and a route that traders and shepherds have used for centuries. Today, it’s a crossroads of hiking and cycling trails. As you descend toward the pass, civilization gradually reappears, though the sense of accomplishment from three days in the mountains stays with you. From here, transport takes you back to your base camp hotel, where a hot shower and comfortable bed are waiting.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑360m ↓490m | 5 hours
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Val Gardena

Your Val Gardena adventure comes to a close this morning. Wake to your last mountain sunrise, take your time over breakfast, and let it sink in: four days on trails that carried you across Europe’s largest alpine plateau, over the Sciliar, and around the Sassolungo, with the Odle spires and Marmolada in view the whole way. After that, you’re free to head off at your own pace or stay on a little longer to make the most of the valley.

For those continuing on our 6 or 7-day extensions, the adventure isn’t over yet; Seceda and its spires are still ahead.

Tour Duration Options:

Want to go deeper into Val Gardena’s mountains? Our extended tours add one or two day hikes from your base camp hotel, focusing on the Puez-Odle group. These are true base-camp days: you head out each morning and return to the same hotel each evening, luggage already waiting.

You can choose either or both:

  • Extra day option 1: A hike through the Seceda region, home to some of the most photographed mountain scenery in the Dolomites. The Odle spires rise like a natural cathedral, their needle-like peaks drawing hikers and photographers from around the world.
  • Extra day option 2: A route through the Vallunga gorge, a valley cutting deep into the Puez-Odle highlands, where you’ll feel fully immersed in untouched alpine wilderness.

Both routes match the difficulty of the main hut-to-hut trek, with the same mix of physical challenge and standout scenery. They’re a good fit for hikers who want to see more of the region without giving up the comfort of returning to the same hotel each night.

Transport & Accessibility

Start Location: Val Gardena

End Location: Val Gardena

Nearby Airports: Innsbruck, Verona, Treviso, Venice & Bolzano (closest but smaller airport)

Nearby Cities: Bolzano, Trento, Merano, Bressanone

We provide all guests with up-to-date public transport instructions and timetables based on your specific arrival and departure points (main towns and airports).

Getting There

Val Gardena is well-connected. Bolzano (BZO) is the closest regional gateway, while Innsbruck (INN) and Verona (VRN) serve as the nearest major international entry points, both located within a two-hour drive.

  • By Car: Take the A22 Brenner motorway from either the north or south, exiting at Chiusa/Val Gardena (Klausen/Gröden), where a well-maintained mountain road leads directly into the valley’s main villages.
  • By Bus: Direct express coach services run regularly from regional hubs and airports straight into the valley via operators like Alto Adige Bus, FlixBus, and Itabus, supplemented by a comprehensive local network (Südtirol Mobil) linking all villages.
  • By Train: High-speed Eurocity and regional trains connect major northern Italian and Austrian hubs directly to Bolzano and Bressanone, where frequent local buses connect straight to Ortisei, Santa Cristina, and Selva.

Self-Guided Tour FAQ

Absolutely. This tour has very well-maintained paths and good signage, making it very easy to navigate. Val Gardena is also a busy area, so you will never truly be alone. Many self-guided hikers travel solo and find it a rewarding experience. In mountain huts, you’ll be accommodated in shared dormitories where you’ll naturally meet other hikers from around the world.

The trails are well-marked and maintained, and you’ll receive detailed route instructions, an electronic trail map app for your smartphone, and a map. Our 24-hour support line provides peace of mind if you need assistance. However, you should be comfortable with independent navigation and decision-making in mountain environments.

Private Guided Tour FAQ

It’s a dedicated group booking for your group only, not a shared departure with others.

Our pricing is based on a minimum of 4 people per group, with a recommended maximum of 7 participants per guide for safety, transport, and accommodation reasons. Larger groups can be accommodated on request.

Yes. Your guide tailors the daily pace, breaks, and commentary to your group’s preferences and abilities.

Accommodation on private guided tours is shared dormitory. Private rooms can be requested, subject to availability, at an additional cost.

Small Group Tour FAQ

Yes, mountain hut accommodation on this route (Days 2 and 3) is dormitory-style.

The itinerary is built around a consistent, easy-moderate difficulty level, which tends to suit a mixed-fitness group well. Your guide will always assess and set the pace.

General Tour FAQ

We strongly recommend comprehensive insurance covering mountain hiking up to 3,200 meters, medical expenses, emergency mountain rescue and helicopter evacuation, trip cancellation, and lost belongings. Mountain rescue can be extremely costly. Ensure your policy specifically covers trekking and alpine activities at altitude – many standard policies don’t.

Half-board is standard at all rifugios, which includes dinner and breakfast.

Lunches are not included, but most huts offer packed lunches, which you can order the night before, or you can purchase meals at huts you pass during the day.

Hut breakfasts include bread, cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, muslie, and hot beverages.

Dinners are multi-course, communal meals featuring local dishes like polenta, pasta, goulash, soups, cake & strudel. Some huts offer a choice of 2-3 meals per course, others operate à la carte, more like a restaurant.

Vegetarian and vegan options are usually available if requested in advance.

Please communicate any allergies or food intolerances when checking in, and again at meal times.

Most huts can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free meals, though options may be limited. Inform us of any dietary needs, allergies, or intolerances at booking so we can notify all huts in advance. Huts prepare meals based on bookings with limited storage, so last-minute requests can’t always be fulfilled. For highly specific requirements, consider supplementing with your own provisions.

You can stop at Malga’s (alpine farms) or mountain huts (rifugios) along the way and purchase complete meals, snacks, drinks, etc.

You will also have the option to purchase a packed lunch from most huts. You just need to order it the evening before – check with the hut staff when checking in.

Mobile coverage is generally good but varies by location and can be unreliable in deep valleys or some high ridges. Most huts have a signal, and many offer WiFi (sometimes for a fee). Download offline maps as backup and carry a portable charger. Inform someone at home of your daily itinerary and expected arrival times.

Yes – most huts have outlets available in common areas or rooms. As a precaution, we recommend bringing a compact power bank.

Since you’re staying in mountain huts, pack light. Essential items include: a sleeping bag liner (mandatory in all rifugios), lightweight hut clothes, toiletries, a quick-dry towel, a waterproof jacket and layers, sunscreen and sunglasses, water, snacks, a headlamp, earplugs, flip-flops or sandles for the huts, and cash (most huts don’t accept cards).

We recommend that your total pack weight be around 8 -12kg.

We provide a full pack list upon booking with us.

You can also get a good idea from our Packing List page.

No. Mountain huts provide blankets and pillows, but you must bring your own sleeping bag liner or slip for hygiene purposes. This is mandatory in all rifugios (that do not supply linen). You can purchase cotton, silk, or synthetic liners – they’re lightweight and pack down small.

Hiking poles are highly recommended, especially for steep descents and for stability on rocky sections. They’re particularly helpful on trails when rocks can be slippery and can take alot of pressure off your knees.

Collapsible poles are best so you can stow them when necessary.

Most huts offer showers for an additional fee (€3-8 for a few minutes of hot water), but availability depends on water supply and can be limited during busy periods. Not all huts have showers, and some may turn them off during dry spells. Bring wet wipes just in case, and a quick-dry towel.

Upon booking, we request your arrival airport or the nearest town you will be coming from. We then provide you with transport options, the latest timetable, and directions.

The itinerary has pre-booked accommodations at specific huts each night, so modifications are limited. However, you have options for alternative paths or can shorten stages using cable cars where available. If you need a rest day or must cut the trek short, we can help arrange alternatives. Changes may incur additional costs and are subject to availability.

Generally not, it will depend on your group size and availability during the season. All three are excellent starting points with good transportation connections and amenities. If you have a preference, please ask us when booking, and we will do our best to reserve it for you.

  • Ortisei is the valley’s main town with the most shops, restaurants, and services – convenient if you prefer easy access to amenities.
  • Santa Cristina offers a quieter, more intimate village atmosphere with beautiful mountain surroundings.
  • Selva sits highest in the valley with authentic alpine character and immediate trail access.

Within the framework of pre-booked accommodations, you have flexibility in your daily hiking schedule. You can start earlier or later, take longer breaks, or add optional detours where feasible. However, you do need to arrive at your booked mountain hut by 6 pm each day, and we recommend following the suggested timeline routes and suggestions to ensure you have adequate time to arrive.

Yes, for most children. Everyone on the tour should be comfortable with 4–6 hours of light-to-moderate effort per day, so it works well for kids with decent fitness who’ve already walked a similar distance and duration before. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times, and we’d recommend checking in with us before booking if you’re unsure whether your child’s fitness level is a good match for the trail conditions.

What To Expect

Alpe di Siusi is Europe’s largest high-alpine meadow, surrounded by a 360-degree amphitheater of jagged Dolomite peaks, and it’s the heart of this five-day journey through one of the most photographed corners of the Dolomites. This UNESCO World Heritage landscape has drawn hikers for generations, and the route takes you deep into it: across the vast Alpe di Siusi plateau, up to the Sciliar massif’s twin-towered summit, and around the dramatic Sassolungo group.

These are genuine mountain days, around five hours each, built for hikers who want real alpine terrain without technical climbing. Nights are spent in traditional mountain huts, where dinner is served family-style and the Rosengarten’s sunset glow comes free with the view.

Val Gardena is your gateway and base, a valley where German, Italian, and Ladin blend into a distinct local culture. Whether you’re based in lively Ortisei, quiet Santa Cristina, or alpine Selva, you’ll find the warm hospitality South Tyrol is known for. Want more? Our 6 and 7-day extensions add day hikes to the Seceda spires and the wild Vallunga gorge, opening up more of the Puez-Odle group.

Whether you choose a guided multisport adventure or a winter break package, we consistently receive positive feedback about the quality of the experience. Discover what others loved most about the range of Dolomites experiences we offer.

We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.

Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁

Amazing!!
What a trip! From day one, everything ran so smoothly that we could just relax and enjoy ourselves. The guides were absolute pros and always thinking ahead so the group got the most out of each day. We had so many “wow” moments where you just have to stop and soak it all in. Great food, welcoming hotels, and a perfect balance of adventure and relax time. If you’re looking for a trip that’s easy, fun, and unforgettable, then I have no problem recommending Dolomites Active Tours.

Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.

Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
